The signals travel over very long distance, provided there is line of sight. Performance ? Very good ! The radio receivers in the ESP32 are amazing radiotechnology wizardry. An antenna and USB power supply (aka phone charger) completes the setup. These are available online for less than 20$. What does it take to build a GXAircom groundstation ? Almost nothing ! The hardware is based on very cheap ESP32 developer boards. Suitable varios (such as the Skytraxx series) will then be able to show the weather data on their screen. If you have your own weatherstation that transmits weather data to Weather Underground (there are many compatible models), then GXAircom can connect to Weather Underground, obtain the current weather data and transmit it to paragliders in the air over FANET. Quite handy to watch paragliding traffic and conditions live as things are happening.īrand new in groundstation mode is FANET weather transmission capability. The position data can then be viewed live on various websites that display OGN air traffic. The other is groundstation mode in which GXAircom can receive FANET data and pass it on over the internet to live tracking services OGN (Open Glider Network) and Airwhere. In air mode GXAircom interfaces to paragliding flight computer software. One is the air mode in which GXAircom functions as a FANET data receiver/transmitter and OGN, Airwhere and Flarm beacon. GXAirCom is a FANET centered software project that offers various functions. Thanks to the development efforts of Gerald Eichler an interesting software project (GXAirCom) has become available over on Github.
